Whether you’re a die-hard lycra-clad road warrior, or you’re thinking of dusting off your old bike, February is the perfect month to set yourself the challenge to ride more often, build your confidence, and knock unnecessary car trips on the head.

Last year, 24,500 people and over 2,450 workplaces took part in the Aotearoa Bike Challenge, to promote the benefits of biking and compete against their neighbouring workplaces for glory.

The Aotearoa Bike Challenge is a fun, free national bike initiative in February, run by Waka Kotahi NZTA and Love to Ride. When you sign up, simply log your rides, encourage friends and colleagues and earn points that could win you prizes, if the feel-good factor of riding isn’t enough.

Last year, participants made a staggering 320,000 journeys by bike and 50% of those journeys were for transport purposes. That means 170,058 car journeys were replaced by bikes in which saved 420,686kgs of CO2 being released. That’s the equivalent of what 19,122 trees capture over the course of a whole year.
