Heat pumps can integrate highly efficient heating from renewable sources and efficient heat recovery systems. They also offer excellent capacity and temperature control. Installations can achieve efficiencies of over 300% and use a range of low-temperature heat sources. The total operating costs of heat pumps can be much lower than other heating options such as gas, oil, coal or biofuel boilers.

Dielectric heating uses electromagnetic waves and fields of varying frequencies to heat materials uniformly rather than applying heat from the outside. The operation is more efficient. In a dielectric oven, heat is generated when high frequency microwaves or radio frequency (RF) electric fields cause molecules within the product to move.

Direct resistance heating methods heat by using a product’s own electrical resistance. This is achieved by passing an electrical current through the product causing it to generate heat. For direct resistance heaters to work, the product being heated must be electrically conductive. Examples include molten glass, metal, salt or tap water, liquid food products and concrete.

Infra-red provides a flexible and efficient form of process heating that can be adapted to fit existing or new production lines. Infra-red equipment is generally low cost. It is safe, clean and can be used as an efficient way to heat many materials and products. Infra-red is also commonly used to provide heating for humans, plants and animals.

Thermal storage help you to shift process heating demand to use cheaper off-peak electricity and manage network costs. Managing peak heat demand can improve the overall energy efficiency of heating processes. An electric steam boiler produces steam using electricity as fuel rather than fossil or biomass fuels. This technology suits many process applications including food and materials manufacturing and in commercial buildings like hospitals. High-temperature heat pumps supply temperatures higher than 60°C. Commercially available heat pumps can reach temperatures up to 100°C. High-temperature heat pumps are usually custom designed using equipment from established large OEM refrigeration equipment suppliers, whereas low temperature heat pumps are typically generic, off the shelf products.

Indirect heating methods involve heating a product by heating a medium (usually air) around it – like an oven. Compared to direct heating methods (such as infra-red or microwave radiation), indirect heating can provide more design flexibility and be a better fit with high temperature and high-pressure applications.

Mechanical vapour recompression systems (MVR, also called MVR blowers) recover and reuse energy normally lost through evaporation. MVR is well established in New Zealand’s dairy sector for milk evaporation. It’s the most important example of high efficiency, open cycle heat pumps in New Zealand’s process industries.
